Cant Login Empty Cant Login

I am not able to log in to the server now that I've updated my minecraft to 1.2.4. Should I not have done that?

The minecraft server is currently up to date. but it was down for awhile due to noone coming online. Sorry about that. It's been seeing players daily again though

Server always shows up as offline, i'm assuming that's because it is but I wanna make sure i'm not doing something wrong. I don't need to have all the mods and stuff to log-in, do I? and even if I don't the server should show up as online if it is online, right?
